What is Tae Kwon Do? How Does it help me?

Tae Kwon Do is a style of martial art that is open hand such as a generically called karate style. The type of Tae Kwon Do is ITF this means it is International Federation Style. This type of Tae Kwon Do is more traditional instead of World TKD which is more involved in the sport aspect.

Here at New England Tae Kwon Do we focus on a little of both. We focus on perfecting our forms and techniques. At the same time honing skills for sparring and focus and control drills like one step sparring.

All of these drills and techniques are used to make great martial artists. These aspects all come from the philosophy of doing your best and not giving up. This is why we have the Aims to Achieve that are made by General Choi. (Student Handbook for more details)

This style is easy to learn and is friendly for anyone who is interested in learning marital arts. This hard martial style can help those who maintain practice achieve something great!

What is the practice for?

Drills/Forms:

Practicing forms or hyungs [korean] works on mental focus and physical cardio (depending on the pace). Forms help us practice our basic and advanced techniques to improve them as we progress in the ranking system (more information on the Student Handboook tab).

We practice these same techniques up and down the room to learn them and apply to the forms and our drills to defend ourselves.

Sparring/Full Contact:

The subject of sparring has two main directions you can take here as seen in the Classes Offered tab.

We teach you the basic Tae Kwon Do style of sparring which progressively gets more challenging as you become more skilled. You start in no contact and can work your way to regular free sparring that eventually includes leg kicks.

We also do Full Contact Fighting. The difference is in fighting is more to fight for competition.

Fighting in a ring or cage takes lots of courage and dedication.

We have great coaches that can help you go further in your training to do this while maintaining your Tae Kwon Do.

See (Full Contact Fighting Page for more!)

What do we learn from the ideologies of Tae Kwon Do?

The loyalty and integrity of a martial artist is not only in the style but in the training. This is more on the topic of devotion.

How much you train and put in is what you will get out of Tae Kwon Do.

This devotion can keep us motivated and immerse our determined selves into the world around us.
